Essay on The Effect of Cell Phones on Health - 1300 Words
Todayââ¬â¢s technologies are advancing at such an astonishing rate. This can make it difficult for even the most avid ââ¬Å"techieâ⬠to keep pace. Technology is that wonderful thing that brings comfort and convenience to our lives. But, with that comfort and convenience, there often comes a price; and the technology of the cell phone proves no exception. Arguably, as a communication tool, the cell phone has no equal in how it has changed and affected our lives. Mostly, the effect has been positive in many ways. But, as it is with anything, overuse and abuse has brought out its dark side and the effect of unintended consequences. One of the unintended consequences of the cell phone is its effect on the health of its users and even the healthâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Younger, inexperienced drivers under the age of 20 may be at a higher risk; they garner the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes. The National Safety Council reports that at least 2 3 percent of all traffic crashes, or at least 1.3 million crashes, involve cell phone use. This number can be broken down to an estimated 1.2 million crashes each year involving drivers using cell phones for conversations and the remaining 100,000 or more additional crashes can be related to drivers who are texting. Analyzing this data shows that cell phone conversations are involved in 12 times as many crashes as texting. This seems to dispel the common myth that a texting driver is the more commonly dangerous cell phone activity. Additionally, and maybe surprisingly to some, it is not just our drivers causing dangerous situations on the roadways. Many times, pedestrians entranced with their cell phones are just as dangerous as drivers using them. A study published in Injury Prevention in 2012 reflects that one in three pedestrians is distracted by a mobile device while crossing busy streets. This type of distraction leads to accidents that injure both pedestrians and drive rs. Germs and Cell Phones Cell phones not only carry important data, but nasty germs also. Vietnam And The Vietnam War - 1987 Words
In 1945, at the end of WWII, Vietnam started their war for independence against their colonial rulers, France. Nine years after the start of the First Indochina War, the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu which led to a peace conference in Geneva. At the conference, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam received their independence from France. However, Vietnam was divided between a Communist North and a Democratic South. In 1958, Communist- supported guerrillas in South Vietnam, known as the Viet Cong, began to fight with the North Vietnamese government. Since this occurred in the middle of the Cold War, the United States came to the aid of South Vietnam by sending military advisers into the country. Still, the South Vietnamese government continued to lose land and some controversial events led to the United States deploying more than 500,000 troops in Vietnam. Even with this much military might, South Vietnam could not stand and surrendered to the Communist North in 1975. To most Americans, the loss in Vietnam came as a surprise. After all, the United States emerged as the world s strongest super power with a rapidly growing economy and a seemingly unstoppable military force. The American people were filled with patriotism and united under the greatest government in the world. On the contrary, Vietnam was a small, war- torn swamp that was divided between two different ideologies. Many Americans have never even heard of or even knew where Vietnam was located. Environmental and Consumer Influence free essay sample
External factors such as political, legal, social, ecological, cultural, technological and business ethics will be discussed. MAC Cosmetics slogan reads, ââ¬Å"Professional makeup artist quality cosmeticsâ⬠(MAC Cosmetics). This slogan allows the consumer to know that MAC makeup is so good makeup artist use it. It allows the consumer to connect the dots between makeup artists to celebrities to the consumer and the consumer using celebrity worthy products. With so many other makeup brands MAC Cosmetics is known for being bold and colorful; from their products to the celebrities they use to advertise and market their products. For example, Nicki Minaj, a well-known music rapper known not only for her controversial lyrics but her unique form of dress. She is the flashy and different exactly what MAC Cosmetics attempts to portray their products to be. Before Nicki Minaj there was Lady Gaga, another example of an over-the-top music artist. When describing the psychological and social factors involved in consumer purchase of this product; MAC Cosmetics much like every product marketer have researched and studied these factors under a microscope, figuratively speaking. It is important to understand every aspect of a consumerââ¬â¢s behavior factor to receive a clearer picture on how to market the product. When speaking of consumer psychological and social factors we are speaking of the consumerââ¬â¢s motives, perception, and attitudes. When analyzing a consumerââ¬â¢s motives, a motive is defined as a reason for doing something (Merriam-Webster). When comparing one consumer to another the motives may not be all the same. Motives can range from simply needing a makeup refill to wanting to use a highly advertised product. Wanting to use a popular product such as MAC can then be a psychological factor. When speaking of a psychological factor we then have to take into consideration the needs of this particular consumer. Perhaps this product is used by everyone he or she knows and they merely would like to fit in. But this example is most likely take place in a younger consumer, maybe a high school or college student. Another motive that can be introduced is the consumer may feel good wearing this product. Not only because this product does what it advertises but because the consumer likes how they look wearing it. As discussed above, how the consumer feels when wearing the product may allow them to give the perception of flawless skin. The perception goal given by the models and celebrities used to market the MAC Cosmetics products, they want consumers to feel like they can look just like them. To be realistic everyone has some flaw they would like to cover or camouflage and when told by a celebrity who is admired and continuously looks flawless, that will affect the decision of the consumerââ¬â¢s perception of that particular product. It may also play an important role in which influences the consumer to purchase this product. The perception given by the advertisement then becomes a motive for the consumer to purchase a product they may have had no intention in purchasing. Attitude also plays an important role in purchasing a product like MAC Cosmetics. Attitude is defined as a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state (Merriam-Webster). A consumerââ¬â¢s attitude may have several factors. A consumerââ¬â¢s personality, family, and simply a dislike of someone or something may influence a consumerââ¬â¢s attitude. The perception MAC marketers attempt to portray in MAC Cosmetics is that their product is used by celebrities and models. And for example, Nicki Minaj, as previously stated above she is a music rapper who seems to have a strong opinion about everything and everyone. Using her as the spokesperson could be safe to say that her attitude describes MAC Cosmetics. Consumers then may translate that and assume that by using this product they too can feel strong and outspoken. Social class also has a lot to do with the purchase of MAC Cosmetics. Unlike some well-known makeup brands, for example Cover Girl or Maybelline, MAC is not found in grocery stores or drug stores. MAC Cosmetics is found in higher end department stores such as Nordstrom and Macys and some cities have the MAC Cosmetic stores. The price of the cosmetics is a bit higher than the examples listed above. Which means someone on a budget may not be willing to fork up the extra cash to purchase MAC products. Not saying that you will have to mortgage off your home to purchase MAC Cosmetics but it is definitely a social class factor. Consumers who are or consider themselves in this social class will purchase MAC Cosmetics because like previously discussed, it is not utterly available and is more expensive than others. The psychological and social factors all play and important influential role in a consumer. The factors of motives, perception, attitudes, personality, family, social class, and reference group all play important roles and each tie into each other in one or many forms. Marketers are fully aware of these factors and ensure their products are able to trigger a consumerââ¬â¢s sensation in order to have them purchase the product. But along with psychological and social factors there are also external factors to consider. For example there are political, legal, social, ecological, technological, and business ethic external factors that affect a consumerââ¬â¢s behavior. Some external factors that may influence consumers to purchase the MAC Cosmetic products are social, ecological, and business ethical. As previously discussed a social factor can be influenced by simply allowing the purchaser to seem as if they are a part of an unspoken club. MAC Cosmetics allows their consumers to feel that they are receiving only the best money can buy. By MAC only selling their products at high end departments stores it allows the consumer of only those stores to have access to the product. For example because MAC Cosmetics is not found just any where consumers who shop at Wal-Mart would not have access to MAC Cosmetics. This allows consumers in this social bracket to purchase MAC products. Another external factor that maym influence MAC Cosmetics purchases is the ecological factor. These days, many beauty companies are setting an eco-friendly example and MAC Cosmetics is one of them. MAC Cosmetics is offering refillable packaging and compacts, with refills often old for slightly less money (Pollack Boyer). MAC Cosmetics also rewards for being environmentally thrifty by handing out free lipsticks to customers who return five or six empty product containers (Pollack Boyer). Consumers may be incline to support and purchase products from MAC Cosmetics because they are supporting the environment through earth-sustaining and earth-fri endly practices. Another external factor that may influence a consumer behavior to purchase MAC Cosmetics is business ethics. For MAC Cosmetics business ethics and ecological factors play hand-in-hand. Along with their ecological practices MAC Cosmetics contribute to the fair trade and community. Fair trade means paying a fair price for outsourced labor, while community trade creates long-term economic initiatives to ensure sustainability within the communities in which ingredients are extracted (Pollack Boyer). MAC Cosmetics and other companies are not only transforming their own products, but also supporting others who are helping the environment (Pollack Boyer). As discussed above the analysis of consumers behaviors have many different factors and each consumer situation is different. MAC Cosmetics may not be for everyone but they try hard to be for everyone. Marketers ensure to stimulate all aspects of consumers psychological and social factors and their external factors. Some examples were given for each factor in order to better understand a consumer and their reasons for purchasing the MAC Cosmetics products. MAC Cosmetics advertises to have ââ¬Å"more than 100 shades for eyes, lips, and face, everything a makeup addict cannot live withoutâ⬠, you be the judge. REFERENCES Bagozzi, R. Because the phases overlap, a lot of flexibility has been introduced in the modified model of software engineering. At the same time, a number of tasks can function concurrently, which ensures that the defects in the software are removed in the development stage itself and the overhead cost of making changes to the software before implementation is saved. Figure 4. The Modified Waterfall Model We use this model in our system because it is flexible and easy to modify. At the same time making changes to the basic design is also possible, as there are a number of phases active at one point of time. In case there are any errors introduced because of the changes made, rectifying them is also easy because every phase of he model verification and validation step has been added. It can also reduce the number of paper works and we can have more time to do the system. The following procedures are needed to be performed in order to operate or use the system. 1 . Acquire and set up all hardware and software needed. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. Install the system. 4. Click on the shortcut icon for Salon Management System. 10 Types of Hyphenation Errors
10 Types of Hyphenation Errors 10 Types of Hyphenation Errors 10 Types of Hyphenation Errors By Mark Nichol Iââ¬â¢ve written more than once about hyphens, including this previous post, but it remains a troublesome topic, so Iââ¬â¢ll approach it from this direction, too: the categories of hyphenation errors. 1. Omitting Hyphens in Phrasal Adjectives Some phrasal adjectives (including ââ¬Å"civil rights,â⬠ââ¬Å"stock market,â⬠and ââ¬Å"high schoolâ⬠) donââ¬â¢t require hyphenation when they appear before a noun; theyââ¬â¢re so well entrenched in the language that no risk of ambiguity exists, and their status is enshrined by inclusion in dictionaries. But when two words team together to describe a noun, theyââ¬â¢re usually hyphenated. (Leave them open after a noun, however.) If you canââ¬â¢t find them in your well-thumbed dictionary, attach them and donââ¬â¢t hesitate to link more than two words: ââ¬Å"The company instituted a pay-as-you-go plan.â⬠2. Adding Hyphens to Compound Words Compound words come in three forms: open (ââ¬Å"sand dollarâ⬠), hyphenated (sand-blind), and closed (sandbag). As you see from these examples, compounds including the same particular word are not necessarily treated the same; compounding is a random process related to usage. (Popular treatment of long-hyphenated compounds changes so rapidly that dictionaries change them in new editions to reflect prevailing usage; pigeonhole formerly pigeon-hole is just one example.) 3. Adding Hyphens to Prefixes Prefixes, on the other hand, are almost always closed up to the root word. Exceptions include when the root word is a proper name (pre-Christian) and when the prefix ends and the root word begins with an i (anti-inflammatory). Note, however, that this is not true in the case of e (preempt). Another exception is words beginning with c preceded by co-, because to many people, terms like co-chair look awkward without a hyphen. 4. Omitting Hyphens from Potential Homographs Sometimes, prefixed words that would otherwise be closed up retain a hyphen to distinguish them from otherwise identical-looking words, such as re-cover as opposed to recover and re-creation as distinct from recreation. 5. Omitting Hyphens in Verb Phrases Compound verbs, those consisting of more than one word, are hyphenated (test-drive) or closed (troubleshoot); the dictionary will let you know which form to employ. Note, however, the difference in nearly identical-looking compound verbs and open compound nouns: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to test-drive it tomorrow,â⬠but ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to take it on a test drive tomorrow.â⬠Also, consider the subtle difference between gerunds formed from a hyphenated compound verb that are followed, or not followed, by an object: ââ¬Å"I was spot-checking the report when I found a serious error,â⬠but ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to do a little spot checking.â⬠6. Adding Hyphens to Adverbial Phrases Adverbs are not attached to adjectives when they team up to modify a noun: ââ¬Å"The slowly melting ice rendered the river crossing a perilous enterprise.â⬠However, the presence of an adverb does not negate the need for a hyphen in a phrasal adjective that follows it: ââ¬Å"Hers was an eloquently sharp-tongued response.â⬠7. Adding Hyphens to Prepositional Phrases Phrases telling the reader to do something in which the first word is a verb and the second is a preposition are not hyphenated: ââ¬Å"Sign in at the registration table.â⬠(The phrase is hyphenated, however, when it modifies a noun: ââ¬Å"Go to the sign-in table.â⬠) 8. Adding or Omitting Hyphens When Referring to Ages or Physical Dimensions When a person is identified by their age with the phrase ââ¬Å"seven-year-old,â⬠for example, the phrase is hyphenated whether it modifies child, boy, girl, and so on or the noun is implied. (Note that two hyphens are necessary and that, for the spelled-out form of a two-digit number, three are required: ââ¬Å"twenty-seven-year-old.â⬠) However, the constituent words are unattached when the phrase follows the noun: ââ¬Å"The child is seven years old. By the same rules, words describing an objectââ¬â¢s physical dimensions are similarly linked: ââ¬Å"Cut the eight-foot-long board in half.â⬠Note, again, that all the words describing the length of the board are attached: If the final hyphen is incorrectly omitted, the reference to a board that is eight feet long is erroneously changed to describe a long board with eight feet. 9. Omitting Letter Spaces When Using Hyphens When you see a hyphen followed by a letter space, donââ¬â¢t assume the space is an error. ââ¬Å"The assignment is a 2,000- to 5,000-word essayâ⬠is correct; word has been omitted after the first number because it is implied by its presence after the second number. (This usage is called suspensive hyphenation.) 10. Confusing Hyphens and Dashes Many publications, for the sake of simplicity or because the producers donââ¬â¢t know any better, use single hyphens in place of em dashes or double hyphens (the less aesthetically pleasing alternative that is frequently employed online). But they look stubby and ugly, and this crime against aesthetics is compounded when letter spaces around them are omitted, producing abominations such as ââ¬Å"The key-and this is important-is to keep stirring constantly.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
